Durgakund temple, situated 500m away from Sankat Mochan Temple is a center of faith and worship for the devotees not only in the city but also in the world. DURGAKUND as the name itself indicates that this temple is a 'Shakti Temple ' along with KUND (pond).
Durgakund temple is a Swayambhu temple I.e self-manifested temple. There are many stories in Hindu mythological books about the self manifestation of goddess durga.
DurgaKund Temple is also famous for its “KUND’’, it is belived that this kund was earlier connected to river ganga but now no such connection can be seen. There are many mythological stories about the KUND, that we will discuss later.
This Temple was constructed in 18th century by Rani Bhabani of Natore.
As is the belief that after worshipping the devi , one has to visit Bhairav ji’s temple followed by Koteshwar Mahadev in order to complete their offerings.
Before exiting the temple courtyard where Maa Saraswati, Navagraha, and Siddhi Vinayak Ganesha are seated devotees offer their offerings to them and get admired by the temple’s atmosphere. It is believed that only by visiting lord Ganesha idol your wishes gets fulfilled. Well, we will discuss itlater. Right now we are going to talk about the temple of Devi and its importance.
The temple itself is deeply scared and supremely divine.
According to Devi Puran after killing Demons ‘SHUMBH and NISHUMBH’ Devi Durga was tired and she needed some time to rest this is when she got mesmerized with the beauty of Kashi and choose this place to spend some time. This place was a dense forest at that time. Although many scholars have different believes and stories related with the self mainifistation of this temple. But one thing that they all agree is that this place is supremely divine.
Talking about the architecture of this temple, we see that this temple is built in Nagara style where we can easily locate the main 5 elements of Nagara style in this temple, when you enter the temple you will see Aradhamandapa, followd by Mandapa, Sikhara, Amalaka, Kalasa and Garbhagrihya where resides the primary idol of deity.
Durgakund Temple is colored in red color as Red is the color of Love and Affection as Goddess Durga is known as Jagjanani (jag+Janani) which means World’s Mother . Red is also the color of shakti as she loves Red chooda(Bangles), Red Chunari and Red Saree, this is also the reason why Durgakund Temple is painted in red color.
It is believed that you have to visit Durgakund Temple in order to get your worship complete and get the desired blessings. Despite being situated at the prime location of the city which is now a days can be called as mini-kota or Education hub of city and is the most crowded place you will feel a sense of calmness and peace in the courtyard of this temple.
